Specchia

The town takes its name from the latin specula, a place that is artificially raised off the ground. It comes from Specchia, conic piles of rock that the Messapi population used for sighting and defense against their enemies. The town is in the lower part of Salento’s inland , in between the Ioniam and the Adriatic seas ,marked by the pajare typical rural constructions and nearly completely covered by olive trees. The Specchia borough feels timeless, the days slowly pass by, the architectural harmony of the ancient court houses and of the palaces has remained unchanged. There are many places to visit like the Risolo Castle, the ex Francescani Neri Convent, the Matrice church, the ancient hypogaeum oil mills and the interesting Immunity Column, of which legend says that one could save their soul just by touching it.
