Otranto , the furthest east point of the boot, the evocative Eastern door that can pride itself on a past historic and cultural richness . It was a fortified city characterized by a labyrinth of small roads and alleys, it was often invaded, occupied for the once very commercial area of Salento. As testimony to all the different populations and dominations there is the Aragonese Castle, the Santa Maria Annunziata Church in which we can find the remains of the 800 faithful Christians who where killed in the 1480 massacre by the Turks. The Cathedral also treasures an extraordinary pavement made of mosaics, that depicts the Tree of Life.
